Intermediate violins, violas and cellos are differentiated from beginner instruments in several ways. First, the student will usually have 2 or more years of experience playing their instrument.
Secondly, the student has reached a level where they are ready for an instrument that has a bit more power in terms of projection and volume, and are ready to explore a little more color in the sound. Better intermediate bows allow for new bow techniques.
Intermediate violins, violas, and cellos assist students as they make their step to the next level of playing. We've selected these specific instruments for their excellent value to price ratio.
The entry level violin and viola of the August Kohr series, the K525 has good projection with a clear "E" string that is strong but not overly bright. Sustainable power without more complex tonality makes it a good "high achieving beginner" option. A seasoned spruce top gives the K525 a step up on it's more basic cousin, the Johannes Kohr K500 listed on our beginner instrument page. This instrument allows students on a budget to get a solid performing intermediate instrument for a reasonable price.

The August Kohr KR20 is the perfect introduction to a European made violin or viola, with a clear, even tone on all strings. The intermediate player who is ready to explore an instrument with more sound quality will find the August Kohr KR20 a perfect match to their growing skills.
This instrument is consistently excellent, with Romanian craftsmanship evident in the details. Moderately flamed wood with good graduation of the top.

The Gewa Maestro I violin represents some of the best workmanship from the German based company’s China workshop.
This instrument has a clear, focused tone quality and is available as pictured and also with a dark brown antiqued varnish.
Violin, 4/4 only: $700 or $750 for antiqued.
The K555 is a beautifully made violin with an exceptional sound in its price range. Warm with some complexity, this instrument has been consistently good and features nicely executed antiquing.

Viola: $999 to $1300 depending on size and finish style
The Gewa Maestro I cello is another excellent instrument from the German company Gewa. While made in China, this fully carved cello is made in a workshop overseen by master violin makers and produces wonderful instruments at this level.
It features a light, spirit varnish that allows the instrument to speak easily with a full, vibrant tone.

Advancing level instruments are typically for students with 3 or more years of playing experience. These violins, violas and cellos can be used to explore some of the basic capabilities of professional instruments. They possess a wider range of color for the advancing student's better expressive abilities, and they will be even more refined with very good projection and capable of subtleties only available at this level.
Students participating in competitions and auditions especially benefit from the mature student sound of an advancing student level instrument. Bows at the advancing level are well balanced of good pernambuco wood and sold individually according to the student's ability, preferences and instrument choice.
The Martin Beck is a fine Romanian-made violin from the House of Weaver collection of student instruments. A big, open sound and nice complexity in the tone make this violin a true advancing violin for a reasonable price. The nicely antiqued varnish is hand applied in Maryland at the House of Weaver workshop. We are pleased to be the only House of Weaver violin dealer in North Carolina. This is the best violin for this price we have ever offered.

From Romania comes the excellent August Kohr KR30, an advancing student instrument from Europe. The August Kohr KR30 is pleasant and enjoyable to play, with a warm sound and medium projection that is better suited to ensembles than solo playing. Also available as a viola.

Another excellent instrument finished at the House of Weaver workshop in Maryland. This viola originates in Hong Kong and is absolutely exceptional to hear. A full, warm tone with plenty of power, this is the perfect viola for the violist ready to be heard and start placing well in auditions. We are certain you will not find any viola that sounds as good as the Richard Henson for this price. We are pleased to be the only House of Weaver viola dealer in North Carolina.

The German-made Jurgen Klier is another beautiful violin finished in the House of Weaver workshop in Maryland. Substantial complexity and power make this a perfect option for the advancing violinist wanting to stand out in auditions. Perfectly executed, the antiqued varnish makes the Klier violin beautiful to see as well.

The Gewa Maestro V violin is the flagship of Gewa’s Maestro violin line with plenty of sound complexity and volume. This violin possesses both sweetness & sonority, as well as plenty of brilliance in the upper range.
Violin: $1750.
The August F. Kohr HC2100 is an advancing level violin with a warm and complex tone quality. Workmanship is superb with careful attention to graduation (thickness of wood).
This instrument is an excellent performance level instrument.

The August Kohr 900 series begins to explore the complexity and projection of professional level cellos, with good sound color and plenty of projection for the advancing player.
This 900C has nicely flamed wood and excellent fully carved construction.
